About Psychotherapy
You may be looking for help with life problems you'd like to solve. I work with you by starting where you are and finding ways to work with what's troubling you. It can be very "practical" work: it may be highly "creative". We use our logical and emotional selves: we're not just one thing or the other. Every course of therapy is unique, just like individuals are unique. There's no one else like you in all the world. Isn't that remarkable!
I work online as well as in person in my local area, and I can offer weekend sessions for people whose schedules don't give them space during the week.
I have a Master's in counseling psychology and I'm an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I work with individuals age 18 and over, and with couples.
"What if...?"
Storytelling is a large part of psychotherapy, old stories, lifelong narratives, stories other people impose on us, things we tell ourselves that keep us in patterns that don't meet our needs. I often ask people, "What if...? We consider alternative narratives. We use dreams and fantasies, wishes and active deconstruction and rebuilding of unhelpful stories into ones that support, comfort, inform our lives. Therapy can be hard work--challenging, even exciting. It can also be vastly enjoyable, finding out what makes us tick! Like children playing, we imagine new realities by starting with "what if...?" It's a powerful phrase.
Therapy helps you your own particular brand of strength, your own good power. It's not about rugged self-sufficiency --no matter what you've heard out there in the world, we can't be totally independent. We're built to need each other. We are interdependent from birth to death. Working in therapy helps you improve connections with others and yourself; you can find new perspectives and new solutions: I provide a fresh set of eyes, deep attention to your life, information, feedback and support.

You don't have to go it alone

"Independence" and Closeness
No matter what we were told growing up about being "independent", we are hardwired to be inter-dependent creatures. But to safely depend on others, we need to find people we can trust. Probably the most important thing therapy does is give you an ally, someone to think with, in a safe place to explore feelings and ideas that may not be allowed in other places, with other people. In this safety, growth and healing can take place |
All Therapy is "Custom-Built"
and Co-Created Everyone's therapy is different--it's built around your unique needs, your history and your self. As you attend sessions, we come to know each other; your particular ways of being, what matters to you, influence the way we "do" your therapy. Therapy does have its constants: we generally meet at the same time each week, for 50 minutes. The privacy of our meetings and the confidentiality of your information and story are sacrosanct. We move back and forth between your most important life details and then step way, way, back to find new perspectives, new understandings. You have space to think about things... |
