My take on supervision is deeply related to how I see therapeutic work in general. I'm integrative: I learn all I can about myriad modalities, techniques and philosophies, to meet as nearly as possible the needs of those who come to us for help. I also read and study supervision, and attend my own supervision.
As a supervisor, I believe my role is to support, empower and provide resources to help you do your job not only effectively, but with purpose and meaning. I see supervision as collegial, an ongoing work of co-creating, and, like therapy, a meaning-making endeavor. I value creativity and relationality: I don't expect you to "report in" and I'm not interested in catching you in mistakes. I want to help you through the tough situations and celebrate with you in your clients' successes.
I've been blessed by having terrific supervisors, and they've inspired me to do this work. Supervision in its traditional form has been very much about a junior therapist deferring to the "wisdom" (and sometimes arrogance) of a senior one. (For a distinct challenge to that tradition, read Bruce Wamboldt's studies on how the longer therapists remain in the work, the less effective they are likely to become.) That patriarchal and hierarchical model encourages oppression and squelches creative thinking: it's archaic, unethical and ineffective.
I'm not interested in exerting power over you; rather, my focus is on helping you to utilize your own power in the service of the ones who come to you for help. I'm very interested in how your life experience, thoughts, values, and feelings inform and challenge your work with clients. And I don't forget the importance of supporting the therapist: we are all human beings, and we all suffer.
Some therapists have been injured by supervision that disempowered, blamed and shamed them. If supervision has become a fearful or distressing experience for you, you may find my approach healing and nourishing. Contact me for a free 30 minute session to get acquainted and see if we might work well together.
Fees
£70 GBP / 85 EU / $120 USD/CAD for a 60 minute session. We can arrange frequencies or other session lengths once we decide to work together. Please email me with Supervision in the subject line to arrange a free, half-hour session. I'll get back to you in 2 days.
